Champagne Bérêche et Fils Campania Remensis Rosé 2020 Disg. Apr 2024

Campania Remensis is the rosé of Bérêche et Fils, named with the Roman term for the countryside around Reims.

The fruit comes from three hectares of old vines in the sandy Les Montées vineyard at Ormes, just west of Reims, planted by the brothers' maternal grandmother in the 1950s. Vincent and Raphaël Bérêche farm the family estate at Ludes and have built their reputation on low-dosage Champagne made with the patience usually given to still wine. This release blends roughly 70% Pinot Noir and Meunier with a quarter Chardonnay, topped up with around 5% still red wine for colour and depth. Disgorgement is by hand, with about 3.5 g/L dosage. The palate combines red berry and blood orange character with tobacco and sweet spice over a chalky, saline base, and the texture matters as much as the flavour, pillowy at first and tapering to a fine-boned finish.

Drink now or hold for five to eight years. Serve at 8°C with roast pigeon, duck breast or charcuterie.
