Description
This is Bérêche et Fils' Grand Cru Champagne from Aӱ, drawn from less than a hectare in the cool parcels of Brise Pot and Froide-Terre.
Aӱ is among the most historically esteemed villages in Champagne, a Grand Cru in the Grande Vallée de la Marne where Pinot Noir has always been the dominant grape, and its fruit has been sought after for centuries. The Bérêche parcels sit at 280 metres on the Mutigny border, where topsoils no more than 30 centimetres deep rest over dense Campanian chalk, and the vines are more than 40 years old. The blend is three-quarters Pinot Noir and a quarter Chardonnay, fermented slowly in barrel and aged on lees in bottle for 78 months before disgorgement, with a dosage under 3 g/L. The style is penetrating rather than broad, built on crystalline white fruit, soft spice and chalky length.
Ready now and able to age for a decade or more. Serve at 8 to 10°C with roast poultry, veal or hard cheese.
