Description
Champagne Bérêche et Fils Le Cran, in magnum, is a single-vineyard Champagne from two old-vine premier cru parcels at the highest point of Ludes.
Le Cran was first made in 2004, driven by Vincent and Raphaël Bérêche's wish to bottle a true picture of the Ludes terroir on the Montagne de Reims. They chose two of the family's finest parcels, planted by their grandfather and now averaging 50 years of age, on the limestone- and chalk-rich soils at the top of the village. The blend is split evenly between Chardonnay from the west-facing Les Hautes Plantes, planted in 1969, and Pinot Noir from 1973 vines in the east-facing Les Vignes Saint-Jean. Low yields, vine age and naturally low pH give concentrated fruit with racy acidity and intense chalky minerality, and this is the most tightly wound of the Bérêche single-vineyard wines. It is vinified with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels up to 600 litres, then aged 72 months in the cellar, mostly on lees in bottle under cork, with dosage around 3 g/L.
Drinking now and capable of a decade or more in magnum. Serve at about 8°C with oven- or barbecue-roasted fish, roast chicken or aged Comté.
