Champagne Bérêche et Fils Ludes Premier Cru Le Cran 2017 Disg. Jul 2024

Le Cran is Bérêche et Fils' single-village Champagne from two old-vine Premier Cru parcels at Ludes, first made in 2004.

Ludes sits on the northern flank of the Montagne de Reims, and Le Cran was conceived by Vincent and Raphaël Bérêche to give a true picture of its terroir. The two parcels, planted by their grandfather and now averaging 50 years of age, are the highest in the village and rich in limestone and chalk. The blend is split evenly between Chardonnay from the west-facing Les Hautes Plantes, planted in 1969, and Pinot Noir from 1973 vines in the east-facing Les Vignes Saint-Jean. Vine age and viticulture keep yields low and concentration high, balanced by naturally low pH and racy acidity. The wine is vinified with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels of up to 600 litres and aged 72 months, mostly on lees in bottle under cork, with around 3 g/L dosage.

Ready now and capable of long ageing. Serve at 8 to 10°C with oven-roasted or barbecued fish, roast chicken or hard cheese.
