Description
Champagne Egly-Ouriet Les Vignes de Bisseuil is the house’s only Chardonnay-dominant cuvée, from a premier cru village east of Aÿ.
Bisseuil lies just east of Aÿ and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, and while those two villages are famous for Pinot Noir, Bisseuil is the only commune in the area planted to more Chardonnay than Pinot. Francis Egly bought these 1.5 hectares, spread across two lieux-dits on the south-facing slope, in anticipation of his children Clémence and Charles joining the domaine, and the family has farmed them for more than seven years. Average vine age is 40 years. The blend is seventy per cent Chardonnay with fifteen per cent each of Pinot Noir and Meunier, and the wine, which draws on three vintages, was vinified in barrel and spent four years in the cellar before disgorgement with 2 g/L dosage. It offers a fascinating contrast to the rest of the range: the Egly approach applied to Chardonnay.
Drinking well now and holding for several years. Serve at about 8°C with roast fish, poultry or aged comté.
