Description
Champagne Egly-Ouriet 1er Cru Les Vignes de Vrigny is a rare straight Meunier from a single forty-year-old vineyard on the Petite Montagne de Reims.
Egly-Ouriet are based at Ambonnay in the Montagne de Reims and are best known for Pinot Noir, which makes this cuvée something of an outlier in the range. The fruit is entirely Pinot Meunier from one south-facing site at Vrigny, a commune on the Petite Montagne next to Gueux, where Jérôme Prévost works. Meunier bottled on its own remains uncommon in Champagne, and low yields, old vines and full ripeness give this one an intensity the variety is rarely credited with. This release draws on three vintages: 50 per cent 2019, 30 per cent 2018 and 20 per cent 2017. It was bottled in 2020, spent thirty-six months on lees and was disgorged in July 2023. The wine is bottled without filtration and dosed at two grams per litre.
Drinking well now and holding six to eight years. Serve at 8°C with roast pork, mushrooms on toast or a mature Comté.
