Champagne Egly-Ouriet 1er Cru Les Vignes de Vrigny NV Base 20, Disg. July 24

Champagne Egly-Ouriet Les Vignes de Vrigny is made entirely from Meunier grown in a single south-facing vineyard on the Petite Montagne de Reims.

Vrigny is a premier cru commune next to Gueux, where Jérôme Prévost works, on the western side of the Montagne de Reims. The vines are more than 40 years old and face south, and Meunier bottled on its own remains a relative rarity in the region, still often treated as a blending grape rather than a variety worth showing alone. Low yields, vine age and picking at full ripeness are the constants of the Egly-Ouriet approach, and applied here they give a Meunier of unusual weight and layering. This release is built on 2020 at 50 per cent, with 2019 at 30 and 2018 at 20, bottled in 2021 and disgorged in July 2024 after 36 months on lees. It was bottled without filtration and dosed at just 2 g/L.

Drinking well now and good for five to eight years. Serve at around 8°C with roast pork, mushroom tart or a plate of charcuterie.
