Description
Champagne Egly-Ouriet Ambonnay Rouge Cuvée des Grands Côtés is a still red Coteaux Champenois from a single parcel of 50-year-old Pinot Fin in the grand cru of Ambonnay.
Coteaux Champenois is the still-wine appellation of Champagne, and Egly-Ouriet's red is among the handful that have changed how the category is regarded. The parcel sits mid-slope in Ambonnay in a slight depression that forms a natural amphitheatre and sun trap; that shelter, combined with old vines, clay-rich soils and very low yields, brings the Pinot Noir to a ripeness that is genuinely rare this far north. Yields are held down by short pruning and a green harvest, typically finishing at or below Burgundy's grand cru limits of around 35 hl/ha, and the grapes are sorted berry by berry at picking. The wine is vinified in barrique and spends 20 to 24 months in Dominique Laurent Tronçais casks before being bottled by hand without filtration. Only around 200 cases are made each year.
Drinkable now with decanting and worth a decade in the cellar. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, mushrooms or a mild washed-rind cheese.
