Description
Champagne Egly-Ouriet Brut Les Prémices is an equal blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier from 3.5 hectares at Trigny, north-west of Reims.
Trigny lies in the Massif de Saint-Thierry, just west of Saint-Thierry and Merfy and east of Montigny-sur-Vesle, an area of clay and sandstone over chalk bedrock that gives a rounder, earlier-drinking style than the Montagne de Reims grand crus. The Egly vines span seven historic lieux-dits in the commune and came, like the Vrigny plots, from Annick Egly's side of the family; the fruit was previously sold off, and only the return of Charles and Clémence Egly to the domaine made it possible to vinify it in-house. This is the seventh release counting all disgorgements, and the family's growing familiarity with the terroir and a rising proportion of reserve wine have both told. The blend reflects what is planted, with vines averaging 40 years. It is built on 2020 at 50 per cent, with 2019 and 2018 making up the rest, bottled in 2021 and disgorged in July 2024 after 36 months on lees. Hand harvesting and wild fermentation are standard here.
Ready now and good for five years or so. Serve at around 8°C with oysters, fried chicken or a Gruyère tart.
