Description
Egly-Ouriet's Cuvée des Grands Côtés is a still Pinot Noir red from the grand cru village of Ambonnay rather than a Champagne.
Red wines made in Champagne are bottled as Coteaux Champenois, an appellation used only in small volumes and only from the warmest, best-exposed sites, since Pinot Noir here ripens at the northern edge of what is possible. Ambonnay, facing south on the Montagne de Reims, is among the few villages with a serious history of them. Egly-Ouriet farms in the village and has built its reputation on very ripe Pinot Noir from low-yielding old vines, and this cuvée comes from the Grands Côtés slope. The chalk lies close to the surface and the cool ripening season shapes a red defined by fine structure and lift rather than density, with more in common with the Côte de Nuits than with the southern half of France.
Drinking now and able to hold for ten years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, braised mushrooms or a mild washed-rind cheese.
