Champagne Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Millésime is a vintage Champagne from old vines in grand cru Ambonnay, bottled here in magnum.

Ambonnay lies on the southern flank of the Montagne de Reims and is classified grand cru, its chalk and clay counting among the best Pinot Noir ground in Champagne. Francis Egly is its most exacting grower, farming low yields, picking late for full ripeness and treating the wine as much as a wine as a sparkling one. This cuvée is 70 per cent Pinot Noir and 30 per cent Chardonnay from 40-year-old vines in the village. As always it spent its first year in barrel, then a long stay on lees before disgorgement in July 2019, and it was finished with a very low dosage of 4 grams per litre so that the fruit carries the wine rather than the sugar. In magnum the development runs slower again, and the class and finesse are considerable for a Champagne of this depth.

In fine shape now with plenty held in reserve; serve with roast chicken, lobster or aged comté at 8-10°C.
