Champagne Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Millésime 2006 Disg. May 2016

Champagne Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Millésime is the vintage bottling from one of the best-regarded grower estates on the Montagne de Reims.

Ambonnay is a grand cru village on the southern slope of the Montagne de Reims, where chalk under clay is known above all for Pinot Noir. The Egly family farms a small holding there and in Bouzy and Verzenay, with old vines, low yields and picking well after the rest of the village. The Millésime is drawn from grand cru parcels and is dominated by Pinot Noir with Chardonnay in support. It is fermented and raised in oak, then given a long ageing on lees in bottle before disgorgement, with dosage kept minimal. The result is a Champagne of unusual weight and vinosity that behaves rather more like a white Burgundy with bubbles than a house blend. This bottling was disgorged in May 2016.

It is drinking now and will keep in a cool cellar. Serve at around 8°C, or a little warmer, with roast chicken, veal or aged Comté.
