Description
This is Egly-Ouriet's vintage Champagne, made only in years the family chooses to declare and drawn from Grand Cru vineyards at Ambonnay; this bottle was disgorged in July 2021.
Egly-Ouriet is one of the best-known grower estates on the Montagne de Reims, based at Ambonnay with further Grand Cru holdings at Bouzy and Verzenay and a premier cru parcel of Meunier at Vrigny. Francis Egly, the fourth generation, took charge in 1982 and ended the family's sales to the négociants; his approach rests on controlling yields hard, picking properly ripe and giving the wines much longer on lees than the appellation requires. The 2012 is seventy per cent Pinot Noir and thirty per cent Chardonnay from the chalk and limestone of Ambonnay, off vines averaging around forty years. It is hand-picked and fermented on indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels, then held nine years in bottle before hand disgorgement at a single gram of dosage, and it is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Already open but with a decade or more ahead of it. Serve at about 8°C, a touch warmer if it has been long in the fridge, with roast poultry, lobster or aged Comté.
