Description
The Millésime is Egly-Ouriet's vintage Champagne, drawn from the house's Grand Cru vineyards at Ambonnay and disgorged in September 2021.
Egly-Ouriet is a grower estate at Ambonnay on the Montagne de Reims, with Grand Cru holdings there and at Bouzy and Verzenay, plus a premier cru parcel of Meunier at Vrigny. Francis Egly, the fourth generation, took charge in 1982 and stopped selling to the négociants; the house is known for holding yields down, picking properly ripe and keeping its wines on lees far longer than the region requires, which is why the style is broad and vinous rather than lean. The 2012 is seventy per cent Pinot Noir and thirty per cent Chardonnay from the chalk and limestone soils of Ambonnay, with an average vine age of around forty years. The fruit is hand-picked and fermented on indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels, and the wine spent nine years in bottle before hand disgorgement at one gram of dosage. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered, which is why the disgorgement date is given on the label.
Drinking now and capable of a further decade. Serve at about 8°C with roast chicken, grilled scampi or a well-aged Comté.
