Champagne Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru Millésime is a vintage Champagne from 40-year-old vines in Ambonnay, raised entirely in barrel.

Ambonnay is a grand cru village on the southern flank of the Montagne de Reims, classic Pinot Noir country on chalk, and Egly-Ouriet has been its most closely watched grower for a generation. The blend is 70 per cent Pinot Noir and 30 per cent Chardonnay. The family selects the fruit for this cuvée at harvest rather than after the fact, and the wine ferments and matures entirely in barrel, with roughly eight years on lees before disgorgement. Dosage was just 1 g/L. The house style rests on old vines, low yields, fully ripe fruit and long ageing in the cellar, and this bottling shows it in a powerful but finely drawn form.

Drinking beautifully now and with many years ahead of it. Serve at about 8°C, ideally in a white wine glass, with roast chicken, scallops or a mature hard cheese.
