Description
Champagne Jacques Selosse Sous le Mont is a blanc de noirs from a single Mareuil-sur-Aÿ vineyard whose chalk is unusually rich in magnesium.
The parcel lies mid-slope on the Mont du Gruguet, facing east, and was acquired by the estate in 2003; the south face of the same hill carries the celebrated Clos des Goisses. Anselme Selosse attributes a particular bitterness in the wine to the magnesium in the soil, comparing it to Hépar mineral water, and describes the site as expressing the serenity of an eastern exposure rather than the power of a south-facing slope. It is planted entirely to Pinot Noir. Winemaking follows the house pattern used across the lieux-dits: very ripe fruit from low-yielding vines, natural fermentation and ageing in oak, long time on lees and minimal dosage, so that the differences between the six sites come through undisturbed. This bottling is based on 2017 and was disgorged in February 2024.
Drinking now and capable of a decade or more in bottle. Serve at around 8°C with roast poultry, mushroom dishes or aged Comté.
