Champagne La Closerie Les Béguines comes from a single organically farmed vineyard of Meunier at Gueux, ploughed entirely by horse.

Les Béguines runs to 2.2 hectares ten kilometres west of Reims, in the north of Champagne well away from the classic villages. The soil is a layer cake of calcareous Thanetian sand over clay over more calcareous sand. Jérôme Prévost inherited the site from his grandmother; it was planted in the 1960s on an old, slow-growing, low-vigour rootstock that drives deep. It is close to 100 per cent Meunier, though a small parcel of ten-year-old Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc alongside now contributes around six per cent of the blend. Farming is organic, the soils are cultivated by horse alone and yields are kept in balance. This release is a 2022 base with 20 per cent reserve wine, vinified without additions in large-format used barrels for ten months, bottled unfiltered, disgorged after eighteen months on lees with 2.5 g/L dosage.

Approachable on release, unlike older bottlings, and good for a decade. Serve at 8°C with roast pork, mushroom dishes or a hard washed-rind cheese.
