Champagne Laherte Frères Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature NV Base 18. Disg. Mar 2021

This is Laherte Frères' brut nature blanc de blancs, a Chardonnay Champagne drawn from the family's chalkiest sites at Chavot and Épernay.

Laherte Frères works in the Coteaux Sud d'Épernay, an area better known for Meunier, so a blanc de blancs from the house comes from its most chalk-dominated parcels. This release is based on the 2018 harvest with a significant 50 per cent of reserve wine from the two preceding years. The vineyards are biodynamically farmed and, as well as chalk and chalky clay marl, contain pockets of flint and schist. It is the chalk that drives the wine's racy, saline character and its citric line, while the clay provides balancing fruit weight and texture. Primary fermentation took place in barrique, foudre and tronconique cask, the wine was aged for just over two years in bottle, and, as with all Laherte Champagne, it was disgorged by hand with no dosage added.

Drinking well now and will hold for several years; serve at about 8°C with oysters, scallops or a simply grilled white fish.
