Description
Champagne Laherte Frères Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature is Chardonnay from the family's chalkiest ground, in a district better known for Meunier.
This is the most single-minded wine in the Laherte range: Chardonnay alone, drawn from the family's chalkiest holdings in Chavot and in Épernay itself. The vineyards are biodynamically farmed and lie on chalk and chalky clay marl, with pockets of flint and schist running through the slopes. It is the chalk that gives the wine its striking, racy, intensely saline drive and its citric line, while the clay supplies the fruit weight and texture that keep the whole thing in balance. Chavot sits in the Coteaux Sud d'Épernay, a district associated far more closely with Meunier than with Chardonnay, which makes a Blanc de Blancs of this character something of an outlier from these slopes. Primary fermentation runs in barrique, foudre and tronconique cask, and, as with every Laherte Champagne, each bottle is disgorged by hand.
Drinking well now and worth several years in bottle. Serve at around 8°C with oysters, raw scallops or a young Comté.
