Description

Champagne Laherte Frères Les Grandes Crayères is a Blanc de Blancs from massal-selection vines on Campanian chalk in the Coteaux Sud d’Épernay.

This is Aurélien Laherte’s second Blanc de Blancs after the Brut Nature, and it comes from the two chalkiest, most mineral parcels the family holds in the Coteaux Sud d’Épernay; crayères means chalk pits. The vines are massal selections of more than 40 years, planted on a west-facing hillside where barely 20cm of topsoil covers Campanian chalk. The base wine ferments wild in old barrels of three to ten years and is deliberately blocked from malolactic conversion, which sharpens the wine’s chiselled quality. It then spends 30 months on lees in bottle and a further nine months resting after disgorgement before release. Dosage is under 4 g/L, and the bottling was disgorged by hand.

Drinking well now and holding for five years or more. Serve at about 8°C with oysters, scallops or sushi.
