Description
Champagne Laherte Frères Les Rouges Maisons is a single-vineyard blanc de noirs made entirely from Pinot Noir grown on the mid-slope of the Chavot hill.
Les Rouges Maisons is a prized lieu-dit in Chavot, in the Coteaux Sud d'Épernay, where Aurélien Laherte farms Pinot Noir planted in 1983 on deep soils rich in clay, flint and schist. The wine comes from a single four-tonne press of grapes, which fermented naturally and matured in old Burgundy barrels previously used at Clos des Épeneaux and by Benjamin Leroux. It aged for eighteen months sur lattes, on lees in bottle, and is a pure vintage wine built on the 2019 harvest, bottled with just 2 g/L dosage. The acidity is firmer than in the Meunier-based Les Vignes d'Autrefois, with the chewy austerity typical of Pinot Noir grown on limestone in Champagne, and the finish carries fine chalk-derived bitterness that lengthens the wine.
Fine and poised, and worth decanting or cellaring for several years; serve at 8°C with roast chicken, smoked trout or a mushroom tart.
