Description
Champagne Laherte Frères Les Vignes d'Autrefois is a single-press Champagne made entirely from old massal-selection Meunier planted between 1947 and 1964.
Meunier is the majority variety of the Coteaux Sud d'Épernay, and Laherte Frères has done more than most to show what old vines of it can give. Les Vignes d'Autrefois, the vines of another time, comes from a single four-tonne press of fruit grown at several chalky sites in Chavot and Mancy. La Potote and Les Rouges Maisons in Chavot sit on deep clay and silt with flint and small stones; Les Hautes Norgeailles and Les Bas Putroux in Mancy are on clay over chalk. Viticulture at all of them is biodynamic. The name also refers to the vines being massal selections rather than clones, with a little ungrafted material scattered through them. Aurélien Laherte ages the wine seven months in old Burgundy barrels with no malolactic conversion, then 30 months on lees in bottle, with dosage at just 3 g/L.
Drinking beautifully now and good for another five to eight years; serve at 8–10°C with roast chicken, mushroom dishes or charcuterie.
