Description
Champagne Laherte Frères Les Vignes d'Autrefois is made entirely from old-vine Pinot Meunier planted between 1947 and 1964 and farmed biodynamically.
The name means vines of another time, a reference both to the age of the vines and to the fact that they are all massal selections rather than clones, with a scattering of ungrafted material among them. The fruit comes from a single four-tonne press drawn from several chalky terroirs in Chavot and Mancy: La Potote and Les Rouges Maisons in Chavot sit on deep clay and silt with flint and small stones, while Les Hautes Norgeailles and Les Bas Putroux in Mancy are rooted in clay over chalk. Viticulture across these sites is entirely biodynamic. Aurélien Laherte ages the wine in old Burgundy barrels, including casks from Montille and Leroux, and blocks malolactic conversion. It spent seven months in barrel followed by thirty months on lees in bottle, and the very low 3 g/L dosage leaves the iodine character of the chalk exposed.
A serious Meunier that suits the table and rewards a few years in the cellar; serve at 8°C with roast pork, duck rillettes or grilled mushrooms.
