Description
Champagne Laherte Frères Meslier et Pinot is an experimental skin-contact rosé, half Pinot Noir and half Petit Meslier, of which only 669 bottles were made.
Aurélien Laherte, based at Chavot in the Coteaux Sud d'Épernay, is among the most committed champions of Champagne's heirloom grape varieties. His Les 7 parcel, planted in 2003, carries all seven permitted grapes, and the experience convinced him of Petit Meslier's potential: in 2013 he planted a small parcel in Chavot from massal-selection cuttings, and between 2018 and 2023 he added a further 1.7 hectares, eventually around a tenth of the estate's plantings. This wine draws on two Chavot plots on clay-silt soils and is an even split of Pinot Noir and Petit Meslier built on the 2019 base year. The fruit macerated on skins for twelve hours, then fermented naturally in a single neutral barrel. The wine aged on lees in bottle for thirty months and was disgorged in November 2022 with no dosage.
A vinous, unorthodox Champagne made for the table rather than the aperitif; serve at 8°C with charcuterie, roast quail or grilled prawns.
