Description
Champagne Laherte Frères Rosé de Meunier is a rosé made solely from Pinot Meunier, assembled from three different vinifications of the one grape.
Chavot, where Laherte Frères is based, lies in the Coteaux Sud d’Épernay, a sector planted more heavily to Meunier than to Chardonnay or Pinot Noir. Aurélien Laherte builds the rosé from the ground up rather than tinting a white wine at the last minute. Sixty per cent of the blend is pressed off as white wine, over a third of that portion coming from barrel-aged reserve wines; 30 per cent is a saignée rosé, the juice left briefly on skins; and the last 10 per cent is a finished red wine. The white component comes from vines averaging 25 years, while the red and rosé parcels are more than 40 years old. Fermentation and ageing run across vats, foudre and old demi-muids before bottling for the second fermentation. This bottling is 60 per cent 2022 with 2021 making up the rest, disgorged in July 2024 at 2.5 g/L.
At its best now and for the next two or three years. Serve at about 8°C with prosciutto, grilled quail or strawberries.
