Description
Champagne Laherte Frères Ultradition is the house's Meunier-led benchmark, here in magnum from the 2018 base.
Ultradition draws on seven parcels across the Coteaux Sud d'Épernay and the Vallée de la Marne, namely Chavot, Mancy, Morangis, Le Breuil, Boursault, Moussy and Vaudancourt, with an average vine age of thirty years. The fruit is both organically and biodynamically farmed. The blend is 60 per cent Pinot Meunier, 30 per cent Chardonnay and 10 per cent Pinot Noir, with two reserve vintages making up 40 per cent of the whole and 60 per cent of the material barrel-aged. Aurélien Laherte ferments naturally across a mixture of vessels, including two fifty-hectolitre Rousseau tronconique casks, old barrels, foudre and concrete, and whatever the vessel the wines stay on lees. Malolactic fermentation is partially completed, generally around 60 to 70 per cent. This magnum, based on 2018 with reserve wine from 2017 and 2016, was disgorged in December 2022 at 4.5 grams per litre.
Drinking well now and, in magnum, capable of eight years or more. Serve at 8°C with roast chicken, charcuterie or a wedge of Comté.
