Description
Champagne Larmandier-Bernier 1er Cru Blanc de Noirs is the domaine's first Blanc de Noirs, made from old-vine Pinot Noir in Vertus.
Larmandier-Bernier farms in Vertus, at the southern end of the Côte des Blancs, and is best known for its biodynamically grown Chardonnay. The house also tends 1.2 hectares of old-vine Pinot Noir on the southern side of the village, where the soil is a little richer with a higher clay content. Those vines have long been the source of the domaine's pioneering Rosé de Saignée, and over the years Pierre Larmandier has made small amounts of still red from them, as Vertus Rouge was once as well known as the reds of Bouzy. This is the first time they have been bottled as a Blanc de Noirs. It was made in the same way as the Terre de Vertus, the base wine naturally fermented and raised for eleven months on lees in a mix of large cask and vat, then bottled in July 2016. After almost six years in bottle it was disgorged with zero dosage.
Complex and vinous, drinking well now and capable of a decade. Serve at 8-10°C with roast poultry, pork rillettes or aged comté.
