Longitude is Larmandier-Bernier's Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs, here in magnum, drawn from Côte des Blancs sites where the topsoil is thin enough for the roots to reach straight into chalk.

The Larmandier family work from Vertus at the southern end of the Côte des Blancs and bottle a range of Chardonnay cuvées that differ by soil rather than by village. Longitude takes its fruit from Cramant, Avize, Oger and Vertus. Where the sister cuvée Latitude draws on deeper soils, the parcels for Longitude carry thinner topsoils, so the vines plunge directly into the chalky bedrock; the name refers both to the vertical geography of these sites and to the linear, mineral shape of the wine that results. It is 100 per cent Côte des Blancs Chardonnay, fermented and raised in the house manner and finished with low dosage. The magnum slows the pace of ageing, which suits a Champagne built on tension rather than fruit weight.

Drinking now and likely to reward five to ten years in magnum. Serve at 8°C with shellfish, tempura or a wedge of Comté.
