Description
Champagne Larmandier-Bernier 1er Cru Terre de Vertus Blanc de Blancs is a non-dosé single-village Chardonnay, bottled here in magnum.
Terre de Vertus is the best known of the three single-terroir Chardonnays made at this Vertus estate, one of the standard-bearers of the Champagne grower movement. It comes from the chalky Premier Cru plots of Les Barillers and Les Faucherets, both mid-slope in Vertus at the southern end of the Côte des Blancs. These sites arguably give the most explicitly mineral wines of the village, with a chalky raciness that can recall Le Mesnil to the north. The wine was fermented naturally and aged sixty per cent in neutral barrique and forty per cent in large Stockinger wooden casks. Malolactic fermentation began spontaneously without inoculation and the wine was left on its natural lees for nearly a year, then aged in bottle under cork. No dosage was added at disgorgement, in order to leave the terroir unmasked.
Drinking well now and with a long life ahead in magnum. Serve at 8°C with oysters, grilled scampi or a mature hard cheese.
