Description
Terre de Vertus is Larmandier-Bernier's non-dosé Blanc de Blancs from a single stretch of chalky mid-slope at Vertus.
Vertus lies at the southern end of the Côte des Blancs, and this parcel crosses the 1er Cru lieux-dits of Les Barillers and Les Faucherets. Wines from this band of chalk have a raciness that recalls Le Mesnil further north, and the estate has farmed it biodynamically with old vines and low yields for many years. The Larmandier family decided in the mid-1990s that the site needed no dosage, well before the practice became fashionable. Fermentation is natural, about 60% in neutral barrique and 40% in large Stockinger casks, with malolactic conversion beginning spontaneously and nearly a year on lees before bottling. After the second fermentation the wine aged six more years in bottle prior to disgorgement, which is unusually long for a single-terroir cuvée at this level.
Drink now with air or cellar it further; serve at about 8°C with oysters, sashimi or grilled white fish.
