Description
Les Chemins d'Avize is Larmandier-Bernier's grand cru single-vineyard Chardonnay from the village of Avize, in the Côte des Blancs.
The Larmandier family works from Vertus at the southern end of the Côte des Blancs, and their range moves from blends to a small group of wines from individual grand cru sites. Avize is one of the great Chardonnay villages of the escarpment, its thin topsoil sitting directly over deep chalk, which gives wines of pronounced salinity and length rather than obvious fruit. The estate's approach across these single-terroir bottlings is consistent: natural fermentation and malolactic fermentation, ageing in large Stockinger oak casks, no fining or filtration, several years on lees in bottle, and a very small dosage at disgorgement, so the site is left to carry the wine.
Ready now and capable of long development; serve at about 8°C with oysters, turbot or a mild washed-rind cheese.
