Champagne Larmandier-Bernier Grand Cru Les Chemins d’Avize is a Blanc de Blancs from two tiny chalk parcels on the lower slopes of Avize.

The cuvée debuted in 2009 and draws on Chemin de Plivot, planted in 1955, and Chemin de Flavigny, planted in 1960. Both sit at the heart of the village with very little topsoil over the chalk, not far from the holdings of Agrapart and from Selosse’s La Fosse. Arthur Larmandier is candid about how hard the ground made things early on, saying it was tough for the vines to grow because the soil is so hard, and that they now make really great wines. Vinification follows the rest of the range, with the difference that the small volumes are raised in smaller neutral barrels rather than large casks. The wines spend a minimum of five years in bottle on lees and are disgorged by hand with 2 g/L dosage, which leaves the chalk of Avize very much in charge.

Racy and taut, and worth five to ten years. Serve at 8°C with oysters, sashimi or a simply grilled white fish.
