Description
Champagne Larmandier-Bernier Latitude Blanc de Blancs is an extra brut grower Champagne from the southern side of Vertus, here in three-litre double magnum.
Latitude is entirely Côte des Blancs Chardonnay drawn from vineyards on the southern edge of Vertus that sit at roughly the same latitude — hence the name, which also hints at the breadth these clay-richer soils give the wine. Pierre Larmandier works with mostly large-format casks, almost all now sourced from Stockinger in Austria; alcoholic and malolactic fermentations run naturally and the wine is not filtered. Bottles are matured on lees for more than two years, disgorged by hand and dosed at extra-brut level, four grams per litre in this case, at least six months before release. This bottling is based on the 2017 harvest, with 40 per cent from a perpetual reserve dating back to 2004, and was disgorged in December 2021. The style is bright and expansive rather than austere, with dried lemon peel, chamomile, mint, sage and almond.
Ready now and good for another decade, and the large format will hold it well. Serve at 8–10°C with oysters, roast chicken or a soft-rinded cheese.
