Description
Champagne Larmandier-Bernier Latitude is a Blanc de Blancs from the southern side of Vertus, offered here in a six-litre methuselah.
Vertus lies at the southern end of the Côte des Blancs, and the parcels behind this cuvée are strung along roughly the same latitude, which is where the name comes from; it also points to the breadth these clay-rich sites tend to give. Fermentation and malolactic conversion take place naturally, and the wine is raised mostly in large-format casks, almost all of them now Stockinger oak from Austria. Nothing is filtered. Bottles mature for more than two years before being disgorged by hand and dosed at extra-brut level — four grams per litre in this case — at least six months ahead of release. This bottling is based on the 2020 harvest, with 40 per cent reserve wine drawn from a perpetual reserve started in 2004. A six-litre bottle ages very slowly and pours around 40 glasses, so it is a format for a long table rather than for two.
Ready now and it will hold for years at this size. It goes with fish, terrines, lemon chicken and most cheeses short of blue or strong washed-rind. Serve at around 8°C.
