Description
Champagne Larmandier-Bernier Latitude Blanc de Blancs is pure Côte des Blancs Chardonnay from vineyards on the southern side of Vertus that lie on roughly the same latitude.
Vertus is the southernmost of the major Côte des Blancs villages, and its southern flank carries more clay in the soil than the pure chalk further north, which lends breadth rather than austerity — the name nods to the geography and to that width of texture. In the cellar Larmandier-Bernier works mostly with large-format casks, almost all the wood now coming from Stockinger in Austria. Fermentation and malolactic conversion take place naturally and there is no filtration. Bottles mature for more than two years, are disgorged by hand and dosed at extra-brut levels, in this case 4 g/L, at least six months before release. This bottling is based on the 2020 harvest with 40 per cent reserve wine drawn from a perpetual reserve begun in 2004.
Drinking well now and holding four or five years. Serve at about 8°C with grilled fish, a chicken terrine or a mild washed-rind cheese.
