Description
Champagne Mouzon Leroux L'ascendant Solera is built around a perpetual reserve established in 2010 and topped up by half each year.
Mouzon-Leroux farms in Verzy, a grand cru village on the eastern side of the Montagne de Reims where the aspect is cooler and the wines carry more tension than the Montagne's reputation for weight suggests. L'Ascendant is the house's solera cuvée: this bottling is based on the 2019 harvest and completed with 50% reserve wine drawn from the perpetual blend started in 2010, a method used by a handful of growers including Selosse, Bérêche and Laherte. The blend runs roughly 60% Pinot Noir to 40% Chardonnay and is vinified entirely in seasoned oak, with no new wood. After forty-eight months on lees it was disgorged in January 2024 with just one gram per litre of dosage, leaving the wine essentially unsweetened.
Drinking well now and worth keeping five to eight years, and it shows best at the table rather than as an aperitif. Serve at 8°C with roast chicken, mushroom risotto or aged Comté.
