Description
Champagne Philipponnat Clos des Goisses is a single-vineyard Champagne from a steep south-facing slope rising from the edge of the Marne, offered in magnum.
The Clos des Goisses is planted to 3.5 hectares of Pinot Noir and two hectares of Chardonnay, and was the first site in the region to be bottled as a single-vineyard wine. Its extremely chalky soils, sharp aspect and atypical warmth, with an average growing-season temperature around 1.5°C above the Champagne norm, produce one of the region's most powerful and intense wines, while the chalk keeps a sustained line of acidity even in warmer years. Precise viticulture, old mass-selection vines and moderate yields underpin the current run of form. This release is 85 per cent Pinot Noir and 15 per cent Chardonnay, with 47 per cent vinified in wooden barrels and the rest in tank, no malolactic conversion, more than eight years on lees at a constant 12°C in the Mareuil-sur-Aÿ cellars and an extra-brut dosage of 4.25 g/L.
Approachable now but built for fifteen years or more in magnum; serve at 8°C with roast chicken, lobster or aged comté.
