Champagne Philipponnat Clos des Goisses is a single-vineyard Champagne from the steepest walled slope on the Marne, disgorged in August 2021.

Clos des Goisses rises almost vertically from the edge of the Marne at Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, five and a half hectares planted to three and a half hectares of Pinot Noir and two of Chardonnay. It was the first site in Champagne to be bottled as a single vineyard, and Philipponnat has farmed it since 1935. The soils are extremely chalky, the aspect due south, and the average growing season temperature runs about 1.5°C above the regional norm, which makes this one of Champagne's most powerful wines while the chalk holds the acidity in place. Precise viticulture, old mass-selection vines and moderate yields underpin the current run of form. This release is 61 per cent Pinot Noir and 39 per cent Chardonnay, with 62 per cent vinified in wood and the balance in tank, and no malolactic conversion. It aged more than eight years on lees at a constant 12°C before disgorgement with 4.25 g/L dosage.

Drinking well now and built to hold for a decade or more. Serve at 8°C, or a touch warmer, with roast poultry, aged comté or grilled langoustine.
