Description
Champagne Philipponnat Clos des Goisses comes from a single walled vineyard on a steep south-facing slope at the edge of the Marne at Mareuil-sur-Aÿ.
The clos holds 3.5 hectares of Pinot Noir and two hectares of Chardonnay and was the first site in the region to be bottled as a single-vineyard Champagne. Its extremely chalky soils, steep southern aspect and atypical warmth, with growing-season temperatures around 1.5°C above the Champagne average, give one of the most powerful and intense wines made in the region. What makes the site unusual is its ability to hold freshness in warm years: the chalk sustains a sense of acidity even when the numbers suggest otherwise. This release is 85 per cent Pinot Noir and 15 per cent Chardonnay, 47 per cent vinified in wooden barrels and the rest in tank, with no malolactic conversion. It aged on lees for more than eight years at a constant 12°C and was disgorged with an extra-brut dosage of 4.25 g/L.
Drinking well now and capable of a decade or more; serve at 8°C with roast chicken, scallops or aged comté.
