Description
Champagne Philipponnat Clos des Goisses is the house's single-vineyard cuvée from the steep chalk slope above the Marne, here in double magnum.
The vineyard rises sharply from the river's edge at Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and holds 3.5 hectares of Pinot Noir and two hectares of Chardonnay; it was the first site in Champagne bottled as a single vineyard. Its aspect and unusual warmth, roughly 1.5°C above the regional average through the growing season, give one of the most powerful wines in the region, yet the very chalky soils preserve a sense of acidity even in hot years. Old mass-selection vines, moderate yields and careful viticulture support that balance. This wine is 85 per cent Pinot Noir and 15 per cent Chardonnay, with 47 per cent vinified in wooden barrels and the balance in tank, no malolactic conversion, and more than eight years on lees at a constant 12°C before an extra-brut dosage of 4.25 g/L.
A format for the long haul and for a large table; serve at 8°C with roast poultry, crayfish or a mature hard cheese.
