Description
Champagne Suenen C + C Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru is a nine-parcel Chardonnay drawn from the grand cru villages of Cramant and Chouilly.
Aurélien Suenen took over this small Côte des Blancs house in 2009 and has since rebuilt it around parcel-by-parcel work in the grand crus of Cramant, Chouilly and Oiry. C + C is named for the first two of those villages and blends nine parcels across both north and south-facing hillsides, including Les Robarts and Le Mont-Aigu, with the oldest vines dating to 1951. The soils here run a little deeper than at Oiry, silty clay over chalk: around a metre before the roots meet chalk on Cramant's eastern slope, closer to 60 centimetres in Chouilly. That extra depth and a good dose of southern exposure make for a more hedonistic wine. The blend is 70 per cent Cramant and 30 per cent Chouilly, marrying Cramant's textural finesse to Chouilly's layered frame. The wine aged nine months on lees, half in enamelled tank and half in used Burgundy barrels and demi-muid, then 30 months in bottle with no fining, filtration or cold stabilisation.
Drinking well now and capable of several more years. Serve at 8°C with oysters, sashimi or a plate of jamón.
