Description
Champagne Suenen Oiry Grand Cru is a rare single-village blanc de blancs from the quietest of the Côte des Blancs grand crus, in magnum.
The blend is the 2019 base with 45 per cent reserve wines drawn from 2013 to 2018. Suenen works 1.5 hectares in Oiry across five parcels, from Le Champ Braux planted in 1955 through to La Cocluette planted in 1987 and 1999, so the average vine age now sits around 45 years. The sites lie at the foot of the slope on compact white Campanian chalk with very little topsoil above the bedrock. Suenen aims for ripe fruit at low yields, and the meeting of that fruit with such austere chalk gives the coiled, saline character the domaine is known for. The base wine fermented naturally and aged nine months, half in enamelled tank and half in seasoned Burgundy barrels and demi-muid, before 30 months on lees in bottle ahead of disgorgement.
Ready to drink and rewarding over the next eight years in magnum. Serve at 8°C with oysters, prawns or roast chicken.
