Description
Champagne Suenen Oiry Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru in three-litre double magnum is drawn entirely from the little-known grand cru village of Oiry.
Oiry lies at the top of the Côte des Blancs, next to Cramant and Chouilly, and is the least discussed of its grand crus. Its chalk is compact, white and Campanian, and in these vineyards at the base of the slope only a shallow layer of topsoil sits above hard bedrock; in La Cocluette it is barely 50 centimetres deep. Aurélien Suenen works 1.5 hectares here across five parcels, planted between 1955 and 1999, so the average vine age is now around 45 years. This release is based on the 2020 harvest with 25% reserve wines from 2013 to 2019. Fermentation was natural, with the base wine spending nine months half in enamelled tank and half in seasoned Burgundy barrels and demi-muids, followed by roughly thirty months on lees. The house aims for low yields, ripe fruit and a taut, saline finish.
Double magnums develop slowly, so this can be cellared for a decade or opened now with oysters, roast chicken or hard sheep's cheese. Serve at about 8°C.
