Champagne Suenen Oiry Blanc de Blancs is one of only two wines on the market made purely from the grand cru village of Oiry.

Aurélien Suenen works from Cramant in the Côte des Blancs, and his Oiry bottling comes from just 1.5 hectares split across five parcels planted in the village’s compact white Campanian chalk. The plots range from Le Champ Braux, planted in 1955, to La Cocluette, planted in 1987 and 1999, giving an average vine age of around 45 years. These vineyards lie at the base of the slope, where only a thin layer of topsoil covers hard chalk bedrock, as little as 50cm in La Cocluette. Low yields and ripe picking combine with that chalk to give a tense, coiled and stony wine, and Suenen himself uses the word tonic to describe it. The base wine ferments naturally and spends nine months in enamelled tank and seasoned Burgundy barrels, then thirty months on lees in bottle.

Drinking now and rewarding another three to five years. Serve at about 8°C with oysters, raw kingfish or tempura.
