Description
Charles Joguet Les Varennes du Grand Clos is a single-vineyard Chinon from one of the estate's oldest parcels.
Chinon lies on the Vienne in Touraine, the heart of Cabernet Franc country, where the grape gives reds of medium weight, firm structure and a distinct leafy, graphite edge. Les Varennes du Grand Clos is a south-facing slope of clay and limestone above the river, and the vines there are among the oldest Joguet holds. Charles Joguet was the first in Chinon to bottle individual parcels separately, from the 1950s on, and the estate has stayed with that approach since he retired. The wine is fermented with native yeast and matured in used oak barrels.
Decant, then serve slightly cool at 16 degrees with roast lamb, duck or goat's cheese. It rewards ten years.
