Description
Charles Melton Nine Popes is the estate's flagship Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro blend, a Barossa homage to the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Charles Melton is a family winery on Krondorf Road in the Barossa Valley, founded in 1984 by Graeme 'Charlie' Melton and run with his wife Virginia. Nine Popes was among the first Australian wines to champion the southern Rhône blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro, and its name is a playful take on Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The fruit comes from old vines at Krondorf and Rowland Flat on the Barossa floor, where dry-grown bush-vine Grenache has been farmed for generations, together with fruit from the cooler Eden Valley, which adds freshness and lift. Grenache leads the blend, with Shiraz for depth and Mataro for savoury structure. The wine is matured in oak and bottled under screwcap.
A generous, full-bodied red for roast lamb with herbs, slow-cooked casseroles or game birds; serve at around 17 degrees.
