Description
Charles Melton Rose of Virginia is one of Australia's best-known rosés, named after winemaker Charlie Melton's wife Virginia.
Charles Melton is a family winery at Krondorf near Tanunda in the Barossa, founded by Graeme 'Charlie' Melton and known for Grenache-based wines and its much-loved Rose of Virginia. Rose of Virginia is a deeper-coloured, dry style of rosé built mainly on Grenache, with Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon adding depth, from fruit grown at Lyndoch, Rowland Flat and Krondorf in the Barossa Valley. The grapes are picked early to keep freshness, and the juice is left on the skins only briefly to extract its vivid colour before being fermented cool in stainless steel. It is bottled young under screwcap to retain its bright character and has long been a benchmark for Australian rosé.
Fresh, generous and dry, it is excellent with antipasto, salads, grilled prawns and Middle Eastern dishes; serve well chilled at around 8 to 10 degrees.
