Description
Charles Melton Shiraz is the estate's Barossa Shiraz from Krondorf, released here after long bottle age.
Charles Melton is a family winery on Krondorf Road in the Barossa Valley, founded in 1984 by Graeme 'Charlie' Melton and run with his wife Virginia. Shiraz is the Barossa's signature grape, and the valley holds some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world thanks to its isolation from phylloxera. The Melton Shiraz is grown at Krondorf, south of Tanunda, on red-brown loam over clay that supports dry-grown vines of moderate yield. It is fermented in open vessels and matured in oak barrels before bottling under screwcap. This bottling has been held back and cellared for many years, so the ripe fruit typical of young Barossa Shiraz has developed into a more savoury and layered wine with softened tannins.
A mature, full-bodied Shiraz to pair with braised beef cheek, venison or aged hard cheese; serve at around 17 to 18 degrees.
