Description

Chemin de Reims is a single-parcel blanc de blancs from Chartogne-Taillet, made from just over a hectare of Chardonnay in Merfy and disgorged in March 2024.

Alexandre Chartogne works the sandy soils north-west of Reims, in a corner of Champagne long overlooked and now closely studied plot by plot. Chemin de Reims was planted in 1980, 1995 and 2011, faces south to south-east, and is rich in Thanetian sands with iron-bearing layers sitting above a sandstone base. Chartogne says that character carries straight into the wine, giving full, structured Chardonnay with a faintly ferrous texture. The wine matured in 350- and 600-litre casks; he chooses coopers working with tighter-grained wood so the barrels shelter the wine rather than mark it. Regular topping up, a low dosage of 4.15 g/L and careful handling in the cellar keep the expression clear. This is the most powerful and vinous cuvée in the range.

Drinking now but built to reward five to ten years in bottle; serve at about 8°C with roast poultry, richer seafood or aged hard cheese.
