Description
Chartogne-Taillet Chemin de Reims is a Blanc de Blancs from a single hectare of Merfy Chardonnay grown on iron-rich Thanetian sand.
Chemin de Reims is a small plot of just over a hectare in Merfy, planted in 1980, 1995 and 2011. It faces south to south-east on Thanetian sands with iron-rich layers above a sandstone base, and Alexandre Chartogne holds that the character of the soil passes straight into the wine, giving full, structured Chardonnay with a faintly ferrous texture. The wine matured in 350- and 600-litre casks; Chartogne selects coopers working with tighter-grained oak so the barrel acts as a protective vessel rather than a source of flavour. Regular topping up, low dosage and precision in the cellar are all aimed at preserving that clarity. The result is the most powerful and vinous cuvée in the range. Dosage is 2.5 g/L, and this bottling is based on 2020 and was disgorged in February 2025.
A Champagne for the table; serve with roast fish, poultry or hard cheese at about 8°C, and decant if drinking it young.
